Students often have trouble seeing much beyond their own families, friends, and school. One of the jobs of the social studies is to see how they connect to the past, present, and the future. In their lifetimes the world is shrinking, and this was became even more relevant with the worldwide transmission of the novel corona virus shut down schools, spring break, summer vacations and interactions of every kind.
This year’s ICSS conference theme, developing global citizens, provides an opportunity for educators to share with their colleagues ways they work to prepare students to be citizens of this global, interconnected world.

Mohammad Kaviani is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Economics at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), and Director of the Center for Economic Education. A graduate of Indiana University Bloomington, Kaviani specializes in training K-12 teachers and administrators on best practices and pedagogy integrating economics into school curricula. He also teaches introductory courses in macro and micro economics and current economic issues for the School of Liberal Arts. In addition, Kaviani has taught courses for the School of Education at IUPUI for elementary social studies student teachers.
