The ICSS Annual Conference will be held November 10, 2023
Be sure to join us in person for incredible learning at beautiful Indiana State University in Terre Haute. Join the Indiana Council for the Social Studies as we explore the ways we can prepare our students to be informed citizens of the world around them.
Dr. Lanada WarJack: An eminent figure in the realm of Social Studies and Native American Studies, a member of the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes from the Fort Hall Indian Reservation in Idaho, played a pivotal role in advocating for Native American rights. As a UC Berkeley student, she was integral to the Third Worlds Strike, championing the establishment of the first Ethnic Studies Program. Notably, in 1969, she participated in the peaceful takeover of Alcatraz Island, protesting federal injustices towards Native people, leading to policy changes and the cessation of the Termination Act by President Nixon. LaNada, having served on the founding board of the Native American Rights Fund and as an elected councilwoman, pursued advanced degrees at Idaho State University. She held numerous academic positions, including at Boise State University, and authored “Native Resistance: An Intergenerational Fight for Survival and Life,” highlighting her enduring dedication to indigenous advocacy.
These diverse sessions provide a multifaceted educational experience, encompassing over twenty unique discussions, each illuminating different aspects of social studies and contemporary issues. Additional sessions touch on topics such as Constitutional controversies, misinformation and polarization in media, the democratization of the auto industry, and the importance of preserving car culture. Another spotlight is on the Arab Indianapolis History Project, addressing the longstanding Arab American communities in Indiana and their experiences of bias and discrimination. The Sagamore Institute presents initiatives on revitalizing civic engagement through Youth Civic Engagement Councils, illustrating successful projects and their impact. A special tour of the Eugene V. Debs Museum explores democracy, equality, and the Constitution through the lens of this iconic labor organizer. Further sessions by Dori Gerber offer practical guidelines and resources on fostering religious literacy and a nuanced understanding of the Arab-Israeli conflict, linking history, contemporary challenges, and teaching best practices. Each session is meticulously designed to equip educators with knowledge, strategies, and insights, fostering a richer, more informed educational landscape.
