The American Legion Auxiliary Hoosier Girls State (ALA HGS) is a premier program dedicated to fostering civic engagement, leadership, and a deeper understanding of government among young women in Indiana. Each year, high school juniors from across the state are selected to participate in this immersive, week-long experience, where they actively engage in the political process by forming their own government, drafting legislation, and running for office.
Why Hoosier Girls State Matters for Our Students
As a liaison for the Indiana Council for the Social Studies (ICSS), it is evident that Hoosier Girls State offers an invaluable extension of the social studies curriculum. The program provides hands-on learning opportunities that align with our commitment to fostering civic knowledge, engagement, and critical thinking among students.
- Active Civic Engagement: Participants don’t just learn about government—they experience it. By campaigning for office, passing laws, and running a simulated government, students develop a deeper understanding of democratic processes, responsibilities, and the importance of civic participation.
- Leadership Development: Hoosier Girls State cultivates leadership skills by placing students in decision-making roles where they must collaborate, negotiate, and think critically to solve real-world challenges. These skills translate well beyond the program, preparing students for college, careers, and community involvement.
- Connections & Scholarships: Students network with peers, mentors, and leaders who can support their educational and career aspirations. Many participants go on to receive scholarships and gain recognition for their achievements in government, law, and public service.
- Enhancing Classroom Learning: By engaging in practical applications of government, students return to their schools with a more profound and personal understanding of U.S. political structures. Educators can leverage their experiences to enrich classroom discussions and inspire other students to become active citizens.
A Call to Action for Educators
Hoosier Girls State is a transformative experience that aligns with the goals of ICSS to create informed, engaged, and responsible citizens. Teachers and counselors should encourage eligible students to apply, particularly those with an interest in government, leadership, or civic engagement. By supporting programs like this, we help ensure that the next generation of Indiana’s leaders is prepared to shape the future.
