The Indiana Council for the Social Studies (ICSS) promotes and strengthens social studies education across Indiana through professional development, an annual state conference, and electronic communication. ICSS also serves as a statewide network for educators to share resources, events, and news. ICSS is the official state affiliate of the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS), and Board members are expected to maintain NCSS membership.

ICSS Board members serve two-year terms and meet approximately four times per year, typically at the Indiana Historical Society in Indianapolis, with an additional meeting held prior to the annual State Conference. Board members are expected to attend meetings, assist with conference planning and operations, and participate in a one-day summer planning retreat. Members are responsible for travel to meetings; meals and lodging are covered when possible.

Because meeting dates are set with Board approval, members are expected to miss no more than one meeting per year. Members who cannot meet attendance expectations may be asked to step down.

Serving on the ICSS Board of Directors provides valuable opportunities for leadership, collaboration, and professional growth.
